Our editorial rating for slots, computed the same way for every game from the figures on this page: the return (its top and its lowest configuration), the top win, whether that win rewards the game's volatility, the depth of its features, and how much of its data the studio publishes itself. Where a figure is not available, that part is left out rather than guessed. It rates the game, not a casino or the studio, and it is not a prediction of what you will win.
What the figures say about Barbarossa.
Our reading
Barbarossa is listed in 5 return configurations, from 96.20% down to 86.20%. Peter & Sons publishes 96.03% on its own game page; 96.20%, 94.10%, 90.60% and 86.20% come from BigWinBoard. The 10.00-point gap between the top and the bottom costs about €25 more an hour at €0.50 a spin and 500 spins an hour, for identical play. Peter & Sons calls 96.03% its default return, a figure BigWinBoard does not list; BigWinBoard's top version is 96.2%. We show both and mark the return as disputed until the studio's own list of versions is available.
Barbarossa, also sold as Barbarossa DoubleMax, is the 2023 game that started Peter & Sons' pirate saga. On a 5×3 grid with 243 ways, every win clears its symbols, leaves a Wild in place and doubles the multiplier for the next cascade; a drop without a win resets it.
In free spins the multiplier no longer resets between spins, which is where the 20,000× maximum lives. BigWinBoard lists a Golden Bet at 50% extra that doubles the chance of free spins, and four versions as low as 86.2%.
Core mechanics Studio
- Wild Cascade: wins clear and leave a Wild
- Multiplier that doubles on each consecutive cascade
Bonus features Studio
- Free spins with a multiplier that does not reset
- Golden Bet
Free spins Studio
Free spins in which the cascade multiplier no longer resets between spins.
Multipliers Studio
The cascade multiplier doubles with every consecutive win (1×, 2×, 4× and up) and resets after a losing drop in the base game.
The sources do not agree, so we show all of them.
The studio's own page is read first. Third-party databases are research sources: we name them, and do not link to them. A studio can supply a game in more than one return configuration, and the casino chooses one. A higher figure at one source and a lower one at another usually means they read different configurations, not that one is wrong.
What an hour of this game is expected to cost.
That is the maths, not a prediction — a single session can end far above or below it.
Thirty seconds, before your first spin.
What people ask about this game.
The sources we read list 96.20%, 96.03%, 94.10%, 90.60%, 86.20%. Each is a configuration of the same game; the casino chooses which one runs.
20,000× the stake.
Very high. Higher volatility means longer dry runs between wins and bigger swings in a session.
Because a studio can ship several configurations and each casino chooses one. A review that quotes a single figure is quoting one configuration.

The verdict.
Barbarossa is a very high-volatility Peter & Sons game released in October 2023, with a 5×3 layout and a maximum win of 20,000× the stake. The sources we read list 96.20%, 96.03%, 94.10%, 90.60%, 86.20% — the same game, set to return less at some casinos than at others. At a €0.50 stake and 500 spins an hour, the lowest configuration costs about €25.00 more per hour than the highest.
