Who they are

NetEnt was founded in 1996 as NetEntertainment, backed by the Swedish gaming company Cherry and the investment firm Kinnevik. It launched its first online casino in 2000, was spun off and listed in 2007 and moved to the Stockholm main list in 2009. In 2019 it bought Red Tiger for an initial £200 million.1,2

In June 2020 Evolution offered SEK 19.6 billion in shares for the company. The deal closed on 1 December 2020; Evolution closed NetEnt's own live casino and kept NetEnt and Red Tiger as slot brands alongside Evolution and Ezugi.3,4

What they are known for

Two of its mechanics became standard parts of the genre. Starburst's expanding wild that triggers a respin, on ten lines that pay both ways, and Gonzo's Quest's Avalanche, where winning symbols fall away and the multiplier climbs with each cascade, have been copied across the industry. Evolution's own description of the brand credits it with shaping the online video slot since 1996.5,6,7

It also ran some of the best-known progressive jackpots, beginning with Mega Fortune in 2009, and later moved into high-volatility titles such as Dead or Alive 2.8,9

Licensing and compliance

Since the acquisition, NetEnt's games are supplied by Evolution companies. The operator of netent.com is Evolution Malta Limited under MGA licence MGA/CRP/187/2010, and Gibraltar's list of B2B licence holders includes Evolution NetEnt (Gibraltar) Limited. NetEnt lists awards including EGR B2B Slot Supplier of the Year 2019.11,12,10

Return to player

Official pages show one return per game for Starburst, Gonzo's Quest, Mega Fortune and Dead or Alive 2. Starburst XXXtreme is listed with two (96.26% and 96.45%). We found no official statement on operator-selected versions.5,6,8,9,13
